School Board Considers Reopening Plan 2021-22

Looking Ahead to 2021-22 School Year

Community members not able to attend the May 24 School Board Meeting can view recording posted to the District YouTube channel, HERE.

On Monday, Superintendent Porter presented a draft of the MSAD 51 Reopening Plan. Mr. Porter addressed questions from residents and Board members. Topics discussed included the proposal to implement COVID Pool Testing, concerns regarding student and staff mask requirements, space limitations, class size, and staffing needs. The Board asked that specific measures be added for mental health and transition support of students. Input will be reviewed and, if necessary, the plan will be revised. The Board is scheduled to vote on the final proposal June 7. However, Mr. Porter emphasized the plan is based on current state and DOE guidelines and will be updated to be in compliance with any changes to COVID regulations prior to start of 2021-22 school year. Additionally, Mr. Porter committed to keeping the temporary trailers, staffing and smaller class sizes regardless if DOE removes current distancing requirements.

Families are asked to complete the recent District survey regarding COVID Pool Testing. A reminder email will be sent.

Avery Olsen of Troop 58 was honored for completion of his Eagle Scout Project. Mr. Olsen described his project as intentionally "ambitious". It focused on the immediate need at Greely High School for usable space that also met the restrictions of state COVID mandates. Mr. Olsen built 14 picnic tables for the MSAD 51 campus, giving staff and students creative spaces to interact. His original plan of building 8 tables was increased to 14 tables once he evaluated the campus space and realized more where needed. The table design was complex and will be useful beyond the current COVID situation. The Board conveyed the immense gratitude for the project from students and staff.

Superintendent's Report highlighted various National History Month activities within the MSAD 51 community. Greely students took honors in four categories of the "National History Day in Maine" contest: Documentaries, Performances, Exhibits and Website. These projects can be found HERE.

Next School Board Meeting will be June 7 at 6:30 pm.
