North Yarmouth Select Board Creates Procedure to Fill Vacancy

Rachael Whitmarsh

Applications for Opening being Accepted

A most unusual circumstance has resulted following the recent resignation of a North Yarmouth School Board Representative.

The process to fill the current North Yarmouth School Board vacancy is not so easily implemented. North Yarmouth’s charter does not align with state laws governing filling school board vacancies. Currently, North Yarmouth Select Board is allowed to appoint a replacement to fill any within-term school board vacancy.  This is in conflict to state regulations that mandate school board vacancies be filled by election.

To date, one candidate has declared interest in filling the vacancy, Laurie Bachelder. Her request to be considered for the vacancy prompted the Select Board to review the legality of North Yarmouth's charter stipulation.

After consultation with the town lawyer, the Select Board has delayed school board representative appointment until after the June 8 election. The process was presented as a compromise between expediency and providing a fair option.

Anyone interested in being considered must submit application by June 10 deadline. Candidates will be asked to give 3-minute presentation to Select Board during June 15 meeting. Meeting will then be opened to questions from residents and select board members. Final selection will be made by Select Board in an executive session. Appointee will serve until the June 2022 election.
